Tanzania

This remarkable and world famous geographic feature is technically a "caldera" - a collapsed volcano.  The floor is an area of over 102 square miles includes a large soda lake and forms a perfectly preserved and self contained habitat for a huge number and variety of animal species.

Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo and many other species can generally be seen here at any time of year.

Maasai tribesmen have traditional grazing rights here and they may be seen in their distinctive dress, tending their herds of cattle.  The animals are not trapped in the crater, and there is some migratory movement in and out, but because of the protected nature of the habitat and the availability of grazing and water, much of the animal population remains resident year round. This makes Ngorongoro ideal for game viewing. There are several prides of lion, and some of the last surviving rhino to be found in Tanzania.

The alkaline soda lake is home to huge flocks of flamingos, a remarkable and unforgettable sight. The whole crater has a quite unique almost magical atmosphere. The lodges are situated around the crater rim, and the descent into the crater and tour are taken in 4 wheel drive vehicles since the entry and exit roads are steep and unsuitable for minibus. Full day tours include a picnic lunch in a scenic spot right in the crater itself.

There is a luxury finish to every square inch of The Manor and attention is where it thrives. Each semi-detached room provides a wealth comfort with their own private outdoor areas that offer distant views of the rolling highlands. With a choice of Champagne, wine chocolates and 2 fire places one doesn't really have to move when it come to relaxing in the comfort of your own room.

The Manor at Ngorongoro offers 20 guest cottages each featuring private courtyard and deck, en suite bathrooms featuring traditional bathtubs and rain showers, indoor & outdoor fireplaces and fantastic views of the landscape, surrounded by fragrant flowering gardens and age-old trees. There is also a 2 bedroom family cottage.

The main Manor building is like modern stately home with crystal chandeliers, gallery rooms, a Victorian style lounge and a billiards room. Being right on the conservation areas border, The Manor often receives frequent visits from a few inquisitive passer by's, such as elephant, buffalo and blue monkeys. And if they don't beat the chef to the home-grown vegetables and herbs you get to eat an almost completely local menu cooked by an absolutely top rate chef.

The hotel boasts a magnificent spa area and masseuse, a huge pool is in the making and their horses are lovely touch. The Ngorongoro highlands offer an undulant and thrilling ride and for the non-equestrians among you, the walking and hiking facilities must not go amiss. But the main attraction to The Manor is it's location allowing guests to experience Lake Manyara and the Crater in two days.
