Best Time for an African Safari

The best time for an African Safari depends on which country or attraction you wish to see. Below is a breakdown by country and attraction, including information on The Big 5, Great Migration and Okavango Delta. For expert planning advice and accommodation contact our friendly safari consultants.

This is the most popular reason for visiting Africa. If you want to see the Big Five live and up-close in the wild, June to September are the months for you. The best month overall is August, as it is slightly warmer than June and July.

If you don't know what the Big Five are, they are African Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino. The best place to see The Big Five is in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Here you will find the widest variety of quality accommodation, from three star to five star superior lodges.

The great wildebeest (animal) migration in Tanzania and Kenya is truly a spectacle to behold. This massive migration of predominantly Wildebeest and Zebra, tracked closely by a large variety of predators, is one of the most incredible life experiences you may ever have.

The Great Migration is always moving of course, as plains game follow the rains in search of greener pastures, and is thus not an exact science for locking down dates. We do however recommend going between February to March as this is when the Wildebeest have their young, and they don't start migrating until the young are old enough to make the journey.

This time of the year is special as not only do you witness many young animals, you also get to see many predators, like lion in search of prey.

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is teeming with wildlife due to the life-source of water that is the Delta. This provides a breathtaking and unique setting for wildlife viewing, catering mainly to the luxury safari enthusiast.

Viewing wildlife on the riverbanks aboard a Mokoro (dug out canoe) allows you a more personal viewing experience.  The area is rich with wildlife, including large amounts of birds. Another unique viewing experience is on the back of an African elephant. Elephant Back Safaris allow you to "walk" amongst the many different types of wildlife, a special experience.

The best time to visit the Okavango Delta is also between June to September.
