Best Time to Visit South Africa

The answer to this question could be July to September or Feb to April. It all depends on what you want to do. If you are coming to South Africa for a wildlife safari, then July to September are best. If you are visiting Cape Town, then Feb to April are best.

Here are the four main attractions for visitors to South Africa.

THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

If you are coming to South Africa for a wildlife safari, you should visit the Kruger Park. Well known worldwide for it's magnificent wildlife, featuring the Big Five Animals, and a wide variety of excellent accommodation.

The Kruger Park is best visited between July and September, preferably August and September, as the weather is a little warmer. This helps for those early morning or late evening game drives. The bush is also not overgrown nor the climate too hot, like in the summer months. This makes for excellent game viewing.

Summary: August and September are Best

SUN CITY

Sun City is the mega African themed resort which is a must see if you are going to be in the north of South Africa. Combining this trip with a Kruger Park safari is popular amongst visitors. The same dates apply to Sun City as with Kruger. August and September are best.

CAPE TOWN

A trip to South Africa without making it down to the mother city would not be complete. Cape Town offers such a rich African experience with it's diversity and variety of activities. August however is the rainy month and you'll land up spending more time on wine estates than at the beach, not always a bad thing.

We would recommend September if you are trying to combine a trip with a Kruger Park safari. Otherwise the best months to visit Cape Town are Feb to April. The vast majority of tourists leave in January, making for less crowded beaches, restaurants and attractions in general.

Summary: September with a Safari or Feb to April for prime conditions.

GARDEN ROUTE & WHALE WATCHING

The Southern Right Whales visit the coastline of the Garden Route region of South Africa. Only a few hours drive outside of Cape Town and you are in one of the most naturally beautiful parts of South Africa.

Whale watching is best in August and September, which ties in perfectly with a wildlife safari. Exquisite properties like Birkenhead House provide luxurious accommodation and a unique coastal experience.
