Kenya is world renowned for the magnificent Masa Mara which plays home to not only The Big 5, but also the Great Animal Migration and an impressive variety of luxury five-star safari accommodation.
The best time to visit Kenya for an African safari is during the dry months from June to October. The wildebeest migration typically arrives in the Masai Mara in July and remains there until October, when it moves back to the Serengeti in search of grazing pastures. Wildlife viewing is however excellent all year round, with the Big 5 a familiar favourite amongst visitors.
The wildlife to be seen on a Kenya Safari is considerable and includes more than 1 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras in the migration across the Mara River, which results in spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities.
The Big 5 can also be seen in Kenya with the Masai Mara in particular offering regular sightings. Large plains herbivores include eland, wildebeest, rhino, elephant and giraffe. Aquatic herbivores include hippo, whilst impala and warthog are also common. The predators of the Masai Mara follow the migration in search of prey and on a safari you are likely to see lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, wild dog and serval cat.
