The Masai Mara Reserve is located in south-western Kenya and covers 1,510 sq km of land. The Reserve is world renowned for its abundance of wildlife, in particular the large populations of cheetah, leopard and lions. It also plays host to the Great Animal Migration which includes 2 million animals consisting mainly of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle which migrate to and from the Serengeti.
Wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara is excellent year round but the best time to visit Masai mara is in the dry months from June to October. The vegetation is not as dense in the dry months and the Great Animal Migration typically reaches the area in July and stays until October.
The Masai Mara has an abundance of wildlife and the Big 5 animals can be seen here. Hippo and crocodile are also found in large groups in the Talek and Mara Rivers. The plains between the Esoit Siria Escarpment and Mara River are arguably the best for wildlife safaris, with large populations of cheetah and lion residing here.
The Wildebeest are however the dominant inhabitants of the Masai Mara and total in the millions. The plains of the Masai Mara are also home to the distinctive Masai giraffe, impalas, hartebeests, duikers and more the 470 species of birds, including cranes, eagles, ostriches, hornbills and falcons.
