The Sand River is located within the Masai Mara National Reserve, close to the Tanzanian border, along the banks of the Sand River, from where it derives its name. The Sand River is situated on a picturesque, secluded site and is inspired by the exclusive tented camps of the 1920's.
The Masai Mara Game Reserve covers 1,510 sq km of primarily grassland and riverine forest. The wildlife is world-renowned and features buffalo, leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, zebra, giraffe, hippo and much more. The Great Animal Migration of Wildebeest and Zebra, followed by predators can also be seen here.
An additional attraction to the area are the local colourful inhabitants. The Masai are a semi-nomadic cattle rearing people with a fascinating culture, divided into several small tribes throughout the region.
The interior furnishings and fixtures mirror the 1920's, painting pictures of Hollywood movies that paid tribute to this classic era of African adventure.
The Sand River Masai Mara provides excellent game viewing year round and is renowned for its large concentration of big cats, namely lions, leopard and cheetah. The annual arrival of the Great Animal Migration adds further drama to this already abundant wildlife setting.
The camp comprises sixteen luxury camps and one large family tent, divided into two separate, adjoining campsites. The interiors have been carefully crafted and the sublime location and exceptional service makes for a world-class safari experience.
